Session: “Getting Started with Distance Education”

In this 2-hour session, you will be introduced to emerging tools and ideas available for Distributed Education to faculty/staff members of UT Arlington. These tools are to help faculty/staff utilize online teaching and learning methods within their curriculum. This session includes:

  • Evolution of Distance Technologies,

Session: “Moodle”

Moodle is an Open Source “Learning Management System” allowing professors to add web technology to their courses. Whether your course is blended or conducted fully online, Moodle has features that allow the educator to manage students and course content. Topics in the is Workshop include:

Session: “Blogging: Introduction”

Weblogs are being used in education as an online tool to help faculty disseminate information to their students.  Blogs combine text, images and multimedia related to certain topics which are published and displayed on a Web page in a reverse chronological order.  Your blog can be either public or private. Topics in this class will include:

Session: “Online Synchronous Meeting Tools”

This workshop focuses on tools used to meet and communicate with students synchronously online. The purpose of the workshop is to introduce the participants to each tool and have them actually utilize these tools in a live setting.

This session includes:

  • WebEX - Synchronous online meeting tool that allows you to conference up to 100 participants. Supports multi-point video, audio, presentation sharing, desktop sharing, web browsing and whiteboard sharing. Capabilities include: conducting polls, a question and answer section as well as chat.
  • Skype - Synchronous tool used communicate with smaller groups of students. Used primarily for faculty office hours. Supports free Skype-to-Skype calling, chat, 2-way video, conference calling for up to 24 participants.
  • AOL Instant Messenger - Online tool used for chatting. Supports two-way video.

Session: “Maximizing MavSpace (blogging and podcasting)”

Office of Information Technology and the Center for Distance Education has joined to bring you tools that can help manage your blogs and podcasts. This 2-hour course is designed for users who wish to gain an understanding of how MavSpace can be used with your Blogs and Podcasts.

MavSpace is a web-based service that allows users to store and share files via the Internet. The utility provides users with a personal, easy to use interface to upload, store, and share files with other people both inside and outside UT Arlington. The primary focus will be on uploading files and the hows and whys of file sharing. In the hands on portion of the course, we will practice uploading a file and then sharing that file.

Session: “Camtasia”

Camtasia is a tool that allows you to create multimedia recordings to deliver to your students. Camtasia integrates with PowerPoint so that it is easy to record your PowerPoint as well as audio and video. You will also learn the formats available to produce your recordings for delivery either on a blog or through a video mp3 player.

This session includes:

  • Overview of Camtasia

    • Using PowerPoint plug-in

Session: “The Smartphone & Distance Education”

Faculty are working with a new generation of college students who increasingly rely on new technologies and Internet services to stay socially and academically connected. One approach for enhancing interaction and communication among students and between an instructor and students is through text messaging.
